What is IP SLA and ICMP Echo operation

IP SLA

The ICMP is one of the main protocols of an IP suit. It is mainly used by the network devices such as routers to send messages. The ICMP protocol plays the role of controlling messages and reporting the error between the host server and the gateway to the internet. The ICMP uses the IP datagram, but the message is mostly processed by an IP software and it is not directly apparent to the application user. Let us learn IP SLA ICMP in detail.

The IP SLA ICMP echo operation is to monitor the end-to-end response time in between the router and devices by using IPv4 and IPv6. To troubleshoot any type of network connectivity issue, ICMP echo is widely used.

ICMP Echo Operation

The end-to-end response time between a Cisco router and any devices using IP is measured by the ICMP echo operation. Response time is the time taken between sending an ICMP Echo request message to the destination and receiving an ICMP Echo reply.

Ping is used by the ICMP Echo operation to measure the response time between the source IP SLAs device and the destination IP device. IP SLAs ICMP-based operations are widely used for ping testing, or ping-based dedicated probes to measure response time.
